Steely Dan rock the Hydro , Glasgow

Steely Dan rocked the Hydro in Glasgow last night in a fantastic gig.  It’s been 18 years since they played in Scotland but they made it worth the wait with a gig that covered their huge back catalogue of classic songs.

Donald Fagen was animated, funny and in total control as he led the band. The stand out songs were Dirty Work and Deacon Blues . The backing singers took the vocals on Dirty Work and made a superb job of it . Deacon Blues was poignant and with subtle prompting from the brass section it was a great moment .

Legendary British artist Steve Winwood was  special guest and he played his hits from down the years.

The first time I saw Steely Dan live was in 2001 in Glasgow at the Armadillo . I was able to photograph the gig and I stayed for the whole of the gig   . I have photographed a lot of rock bands down the years. My rock photography portfolio features a number of the bands .

Steely Dan tour a lot in America , but their appearances in the UK and Europe are pretty rare.

Who’s Next – the greatest rock album of all time

Who’s Next is the best album produced by the Who in their 50 year career. It is also , in my opinion , the best rock album of all time .
The songs represents Townsend’s creative peak as a writer and the album’s unique sound was largely created by the extensive use of synthesisers .
The album starts with Baba O’Riley , one of the Who’s standout  live tracks . The synthesiser loop in the introduction to the song was innovative at the time .
My Wife is bassist John Entwistle’s contribution in terms of songwriting to the album . The song driven by Entwistle’s bass line and features a powerful brass break with Entwistle multi tracking .

The Song is Over is a poignant song about the end of a love affair .

The distinctive sound of Won’t get Fooled Again was produced by a Lowrey organ fed through an ARP synthesiser .
